Americans: Myths, Stereotypes and Paradoxes.
And what to say about the American model of family? Most Americans live in one-storeyed houses with a lawn, two cars in the garage, two television sets and (1) _______ telephones. A typical family consists of parents and two children (although nowadays there are more and more one-parent families in the U.S.). When the children (2) ______ independent (very early), they (3) ______ and live on their own. Hence, the family bonds in America are not very strong. It is also not customary to live with grandparents. Americans protect in this way their privacy and (4) ______ .
Although Americans care a lot about not (5) ______, they are open and friendly. They are always ready to start a conversation (6) ______ the street, in a store or subway. However, this is usually a meaningless   “small talk” which does not tell you (7) _______ about the person you are talking to. Still, Americans are very straight –forward and always speak their minds. So if you (8) ______ help or have a problem, you have to tell them directly. Otherwise, they (9) ______ so as not to interfere with your private life.
It is often said that Americans are a nation without roots. Indeed, they do not seem to be attached (10) _______ to the house in which they live or the place of their work. Everything that counts in their lives is today: today’s home, today’s job, today’s friends … Nothing is regarded  as constant. Americans are (11) _____ than any other nation in the world. They are always (12) _______ the move, restlessly looking for better prospects and a better life.
In Europe there are people who have lived in the same house and been in the same job for 20, 30, 40 years and who would hate to pull up their roots and change to something new. That’s not the American way of  life. They love change , they call it “the spirit of adventure”. So they still like to “move away”, to change homes and jobs.
Americans are often surprised when others question their achievements, values or even their way of life. They are convinced that they are a unique nation which invented almost everything from the telephone to the artificial heart, and created the best of all possible worlds. True or not, they are proud of themselves and their country.

Reading

 I.                  Read the text and decide if the sentences are T (true) or F (false).
The story of the Native Americans – or the American Indians – is one that is unique, tragic and inspiring. It is unique because the Indians were the original inhabitants of the American continent and experienced every phrase of its European settlement. It is tragic because the conflict between the Indians and the whites looks like the same for peoples throughout the world meeting with industrialized societies. It is an inspiring story because the Native Americans, although lost much of their land in the 19th century, have survived, and have succeeded in saving their identity and culture despite the attacks of modern civilization.
Today Native Americans are full citizens of the United States. They are proud of their own cultural heritage, which they are trying to protect and maintain.
Marks of that heritage can be found all over the United States. Many of the names on United States maps like Massachusetts, Ohio, Michigan, and Kansas – are Indian words. Indians taught the Europeans how to cultivate crops such as corn, tomatoes, potatoes, tobacco.
About half of the Indians in the United States live in large cities and rural areas throughout the country. The remainder lives in about 300 federal reservations land set for their use).
Today, there is about 1,4 million Native Americans, which is believed to be more than there was when the first European explorers arrived in the New World.
1.     American Indians never experienced pressure from European settlers.
2.     The Indians have lost their lands.
3.     Modern civilization didn’t manage to destroy the Indians’ heritage.
4.     Europeans taught the Indians how to grow tomatoes.
5.     Today large cities host about 2/3 of the Native Americans,
II.              Read the text. Choose one of the variants A, B, C or D.
In spite of the widespread diffusion, music remains an enigma. Music for those who live with it is so important that to be deprived of it would be cruel and unusual punishment. Moreover the perception of music as a central part of life is not only for professionals or gifted amateurs .It is true that those who studied the techniques of musical composition can more thoroughly appreciate the beauty of a musical work than those who have not. But even listeners who cannot read musical notation and who have never learnt an instrument may be deeply involved so that a day without music is wasted.
In the context of contemporary culture, this is puzzling. Many people think that music is a luxury rather than a necessity, and that words or pictures are the only means of influence. Those who do not appreciate music think that  it has no significance except giving pleasure.
This is, no doubt, why our society seldom provides a significant place in education. Today, when education is becoming very practical, music is likely to be treated as an extra in the school curriculum and which only wee-to-do parents can afford.
1.     What does the author of the text find enigmatic about music?
A.   That it can be enjoyed by anyone.
B.   That a thing so widely loved does not play a more important role in our society.
C.   That so many people who love music do not enjoy it more often.
D.   That our education system does not find it important.
2.     How do different people take music?
A.   As something unusual.
B.   As something not necessary.
C.   As something that interferes with their life.
D.   As something that only some people can afford.
3.     What do many people think about the role of music in education?
A.   That it is overestimated.
B.   That it is underestimated.
C.   That it is not thought about at all.
D.   That it is forgotten.
4.     Which words in the text show that the author is critical about the role of music?
A.   A day without is wasted.
B.   This is puzzling.
C.   A luxury.
D.   Treated as an extra
5.     Which of these titles is the most suitable for the text
A.    A day without is wasted.
B.   Music is not important.
C.   Music is an enigma.
D.   Music is wonderful
